Carol Humphrey, Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan to contest ladies’ final

Carol Humphrey and Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan will square off in the ladies’ Open final at Le Meridien Tennis championships later this week following contrasting semi-final wins at Pegasus courts, Kingston, last week-end.

Humphrey breezed past Grace McCalmon 6-1, 6-1, while the experienced Daly had to pull all the stops to stave off a strong challenge from the youthful Alice Ali eventually winning 6-4, 7-5 Sunday evening.

Shawna Gentle won the girls’-14 and under title with a 6-0, 6-0 over Maria Lopes in the finals.

Defending men’s singles champion Philip Squires placed his defence on a firm footing with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Owen Lewis, Shem Munroe brushed aside Anthony Downes 6-1, 6-1 and Rudy Grant gained a walk over from Dax Hutson in the men’s singles preliminary.

In other results Sunday, Humphrey and Godfrey Lowden teamed up to beat Keith Eversley and Effani Doobay 6-1, 6-2.

On Saturday, Alan Correia went down to Ezra Sue Ho 3-9, while Jeremy Miller 9-2 in the boys’ 18 and under matches.

Correia was also on the losing end against Gavin Lewis 6-2, 7-6 in the boys’ 14 and under semi-finals while Seaden David-Long beat Daniel Lopes 6-4, 6-3 in the other half.

Humphrey had defeated Gentle in the quarter-finals 6-4, 6-1.

In the men’s singles, Lewis got the better of Kemraj Goberdan 6-2, 6-1, Rawle Lewis retired hurt in his clash with Munroe who was leading 6-1, 5-0 at the time of the stoppage and Downes scored a 6-0, 6-0 win over Coard Lowe. In the men’s 35 and over doubles, the pair of Carlos Adams and Lowden disposed of Gilbert Barkcoy and and Bobby Khan 6-4, 6-2. And in the boys’ 14 and under quarter-finals, Daniel Lopes defeated David Robinson 9-4.
