Founder of first Sunni school here passes away

The Muslim Youth League of Guyana (MYL) says Pakistani Muslim scholar Maulana Hafiz Noorul Hadi Haleem, who served in Guyana for four years, has died.

In a press release the MYL said Hadi recently returned to Pakistan and died after a brief illness at age 42. Hadi’s local tenure, as an Islamic teacher was facilitated by the MYL, the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman, the Guyana Islamic Forum and the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC). Suriname’s Khilafat Anjuman also facilitated Hadi’s appointment here.

While in Guyana, Hadi was recognised for his outstanding work in promoting Sunni Islam and established the Caribbean’s first Sunni school, the Madrasa Noorani Naqshabandiyya at the ACIC.

The release said Hadi graduated from the Darul Uloom Anwarul Uloom College of Pakistan in 1998 as a Hafizul Quran, that is a person 3who has memorised the entire Quran, and as a Maulana (Muslim scholar) from the Jamist Islamiyyat Pakistan.

He also held several certificates from other Muslim colleges in Pakistan.

The MYL said Hadi served in several other countries including Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and Suriname where he served as a lecturer at the Djamia Aleemiyya Fareediyya Institute, the largest Islamic College in the Caribbean.

Hadi leaves to mourn his wife and four children.
