Alleged acid-throwing teen remanded

A 16-year-old girl, who allegedly doused another with acid, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was remanded into police custody.

The teen who had neither a lawyer nor relatives in court was not required to plead to the charge of throwing a corrosive liquid when it was read to her.

It is alleged that on Saturday at Laing Avenue, she threw the corrosive liquid on 17-year-old Quiana James with intent to maim, disfigure or cause her grievous bodily harm.

According to reports, the two teens were friends who had a misunderstanding last Friday.

The following day when James was about to make a telephone call at a neighbour’s house, the accused reportedly approached her with the acid.

James is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Her father who was present in court said she was burnt from her head right down to her private parts.

The accused told the magistrate that she finished school a year ago and was currently at home doing nothing. She said she lived with an aunt who knows she is in custody but did not come to court.

The matter will continue on January 25 when the court is expected to have a report on James’s condition.
