The figure the minister gave was an estimate that has to be approved by Parliament

Dear Editor,

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development wishes to clarify an erroneous report in an article in the daily Stabroek News Vol. 22. 10, dated January 10, 2008, which reads “S1.7B for health, education buildings this year – Lall”, on page 11 by Miranda La Rose.

Kindly note that the $1.7B, as quoted in the report, represents an estimate of the Ministry’s Proposed Budget for 2008 and does not necessarily mean that it will actually be approved by the National Assembly.

The correct quotation by the Honourable Minister should read:

“For 2008, it is anticipated that more health centres, health posts and health huts will be constructed and rehabilitated to provide better health care across the ten (10) Regions at an estimate of $390,700,000.

It is expected in 2008, the Regional Democratic Councils will continue to construct and rehabilitate more schools with emphasis mainly on the Hinterland Communities at an estimated cost of $1,396,650,000″.

Please see attached copy of press release issued on January 9, 2008 for your information and guidance.

Would be grateful if the necessary corrections can be made and published with much urgency.

Yours faithfully,

Seewchan

Permanent Secretary

Ministry of Local Government and

Regional Development
