Arrange detours when Parliament is sitting

Dear Editor,

Rocket science is reported to be reserved for the most brilliant of people, mainly because of its invisible variables, if not for its unfathomable intricacies. Not so with our 19th C road transport system. Nothing could be more visible, unintricate and palpably simple.

Traffic congestion in the Wellington St/ Croal St/South Road/Brickdam/Avenue of the Republic axis is created by two events viz: sittings of Parliament and the ceremonial opening of the Criminal Assizes. Vehicular traffic is virtually impossible; drivers, workers and passengers are unable to get to their destinations on time and many manhours are lost to this exercise.

The solution lies with the Traffic Department and the Ministry of Transport putting the brilliant minds of their officers to work out an alternative system of detours, possibly away from the immediate vicinity of the above road network and, at some earlier date, giving adequate notice on the TV and in the print media of the detouring exercise.

Any other solution will be equally welcome. In the course of this earth-shattering exercise, maybe they can find a way of preventing the obstructions placed on the inner lanes of South Road, from Wellington St to Camp St, and that of Middle St, from the GPL Office to Camp St for vehicles seeking to turn left in accordance with the traffic signals. Traffic wardens on bicycles or motorcycles are recommended.

Yours faithfully,

Abel Matthews
