The Peters Hall standoff resembles that of Mocha and from all appearances it might end in court. The residents of Peters Hall were not illegal occupiers of the land, (lands now legally owned by government for development) and that has to be a fundamental consideration in negotiations. Reasonableness and compromise are guiding hallmarks to be taken on board.
While residents were offered a package, including a free plot of land, it is reported the residents are expected to construct their homes (News Source May 8). Is this right? Shouldn’t they get some further assistance in order to do this? The core issues, from the report, seems to be poor engagement on monetary compensation for the properties. That will always be an issue.
So the authorities need to talk some more with the residents and their concerns and fears instead of handing out ultimatums. As one resident puts it ‘… is they want we place’.
