The leadership of the Ministry of Education recently posted on Facebook the progress being made in the construction of one of the new high school labs. It looked great, and the ceiling was also completed. Given the high level of risk associated with the use of Bunsen burners, it is necessary to have an overhead sprinkler system, fire extinguishers and a fire alarm system with a pull station in the labs. Other locations in the schools where such a system would be necessary are the home economics and industrial arts departments.
The Ministry of Home Affairs must update the building code to ensure that such a system is required in the construction of these facilities at our schools. Given the recent increase in fires, especially the fire at the Christ Church Secondary School, it is expected that all new schools will reflect this change. We must stay on top of these critical safety issues. CRG looks forward to seeing these changes expected and implemented before the new schools are used. Current schools must also be retrofitted with these systems to ensure that all of our students are in a safer learning environment.
