Cyclist still unconscious a week after road accident

More than one week after he was struck by a motor vehicle, a 23-year-old carpenter of Canefield, East Canje is still unconscious and is battling for his life at the New Amsterdam Hospital.

According to reports, Jairam “Vicky” Badall who had gone to Reliance, Canje to meet friends was returning home on his bicycle around 11 pm when he was hit. His brother, Errol who was in a street when he heard the impact rushed Badall to the New Amsterdam Hospital.

The brother claimed that the driver of the motor vehicle, which belongs to a New Amsterdam businessman, attempted to lift his injured brother to the other side of the road, but he objected.

Latifan Badall, the man’s mother said the doctor promised her that her son would be transferred to the Georgetown Hospital when he regained consciousness. But she said that apart from starting to move his feet slightly, he was not showing any signs of improvement.

The man’s attorney, Charrandas Persaud contacted this newspaper and said he was peeved that no police action has been taken so far. He expressed concern that the vehicle “is still on the road” and that the police had not measured the spot where the accident occurred.

Contacted, Traffic Chief of ‘B’ Division John Daniels told Stabroek News that the matter was being investigated and that the driver has been released on “cash bail” and that he is reporting to the station almost every day.

He said he was waiting to get a statement from the victim before any charge was instituted. The lawyer said that when he met Daniels recently he was told that two persons had given statements so far.

However, Daniels told this newspaper yesterday that no one came forward to give any statements and as such the police could not proceed with charges. He said he received information that the victim had been discharged from the hospital but was not “in a condition to give a statement”.

Badall’s relatives denied this noting that they had just returned home from the hospital when this newspaper contacted them yesterday afternoon.

An ex-employer of Badall, Shukul Baksh who is close to the family said he was concerned about the young man’s condition. “It looks as if he is in a coma because he doesn’t know anybody and he is not responding at all
