Man critical after Canje road collision

Arvin Doodnauth, who was the pillion rider on a motorcycle, remains critical after a collision along the Canje Public Road in Berbice on Sunday.

The motorcycle on which Doodnauth was a passenger rammed into a Canter that was allegedly driven into their path with no indication.

Doodnauth, 20, of 1023 New Area Canefield, Canje, was being transported by a friend when the Canter, which was in front of them, is reported to have pulled across the road without even giving an indication, causing the crash, Doodnauth’s sister Sophia told Stabroek News.

After the accident, Sophia said, the rider of the bike, who only sustained minor injuries, informed Doodnauth’s family about the accident. Within five minutes, relatives arrived at the scene, where they found the mangled body of Doodnauth underneath the Canter, whilst the driver and others were looking on. Sophia said her brother was pulled from underneath the vehicle by another brother. Doodnauth, who was unconscious, was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, from where he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital owing to the severity of his injuries.

His left leg is broken as is his shoulder and he also sustained head injuries.

The driver, according to Sophia, has not yet been arrested.

Meanwhile, Doodnauth’s relatives said that they are appalled at the treatment meted out to them at the Georgetown Public Hospital, since they have been greeted with rude nurses and have been unable to speak with a doctor so far.

The man’s sister said she believes if her brother were at the hospital in New Amsterdam, he might have been receiving better attention. She said she has been cleaning the wounds on his body. “Me like a nurse inside here because me have to wet tissue and deh cleaning the wounds,” Sophia said.

Doodnauth, who is a married father of a three-month-old baby, is a GuySuCo employee.
