The inaugural Banks Premium Beer 16-team knockout tournament billed to kick off this evening has been rescheduled to February 1 due to the current soggy state of the Tucville ground.
General Secretary of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Marlan Cole told Stabroek Sport that the ground was “soft” at the moment and efforts to cut it have proven futile.
“We are looking forward to improved weather over the next few days to get the ground in a state of readiness,” he added.
The tournament will consist of seven premier teams and nine division one clubs divided into two groups and all the matches will be played at the Tucville ground in La Penitence. The 2007 GT&T Cell Link Premier league champions Alpha United, the Guyana Defence Force, winners of the Namilco Invitational tournament both lined up in Group A along side Beacons, Uprising, Flamingo, Georgetown Football Club, Houston Stars and Sunburst Camptown.
Teams in Group B are Western Tigers, Thomas United, University of Guyana (UG), Pele, Santos, Black Pearl, Fruta Conquerors and Northern Rangers.
UG will square off with Pele in the tournament’s opening match at 17:30 h to be followed by Western Tigers squaring off with Thomas United at 19:30 h in Group B action.
According to Cole, the winning team will capture $250,000 with the runners-up securing $125,000, while third place will take home $75,000 and fourth place $50,000.
