Warrant for Datram

The Police yesterday issued a wanted bulletin for businessman, Barry Datram, who the US wants extradited to face drug-related charges after he allegedly failed to report to the Commissioner of Police as ordered by the High Court upon his release on bail.

Datram, for whom the US has issued an arrest warrant on a drug charge was freed on bail by the High Court last week Wednesday and ordered to report to the Commissioner of Police every Monday and Friday but apparently failed to do so.

Police in a statement yesterday said that “He has not reported and is in breach of the Court’s Order. Barry Datram is now wanted by the Police in connection with this breach of recognizance.”

Last Friday and last Monday were the days, since the order was made, that Datram was to have reported to the police. Stabroek News spoke to his lawyer, Vic Puran on Monday and he said that his client was reporting to the police.

Attempts to contact Puran yesterday proved futile.

When contacted yesterday, Police Public Relations Officer, Ivelaw Whittaker told this newspaper that Dataram had not reported on either day and “so far we have not located him and we are asking the public for help”.

Datram of Ruimzight Gardens, West Coast Demerara, had been held by the police on a Provisional Warrant of Arrest pending extradition proceedings requested by the US where he is indicted on drug related charges.

However, following three habeas corpus applications by his attorney, the latest culminated in his release last week Wednesday when Justice Jainarayan Singh Jnr. ruled in the High Court that Datram’s detention was not lawful. As a result of the ruling, the order granted by Justice Singh on December 13, 2007 that had set Datram free on $100,000 bail following an extended police arrest still stood and Dataram was freed.

Police had shown an interest in Datram after the drug-linked kidnapping of his wife, Sheleza and their three-year-old daughter just over a month ago by two Venezuelans, one of whom was shot dead by the police.

The police are urging anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Datram to contact the police on telephone numbers 225-6411, 226-6978, 225-8196, 225-3650, 226-1326, 225-7625 or 911 or the nearest police station.

All information will be treated with strict confidence, the police said.
