Datram still not found

Almost a month has passed since the police issued a wanted bulletin for businessman Barry Datram, who the US wants extradited to face drug-related charges and there is still no information on his whereabouts.

The police issued the bulletin after Datram, who was released on bail in the High Court, failed to obey the judge’s order to report to the Commissioner of Police two times a week.

His lawyer Vic Puran to whom this newspaper spoke on Friday said he had not heard from Datram, but again stressed that his client was not in breach of any court order. He pointed out that the order needed to be read carefully so that it could be understood.

The police said on Friday that Datram has not been located since he was granted $100,000 bail by Justice Jainaryan Singh Jr.

Datram of Ruimzight Gardens, West Coast Demerara, had been held by the police on a Provisional Warrant of Arrest pending extradition proceedings requested by the US where he is indicted on drug related charges.

Prior to the police issuing the wanted bulletin, Stabroek News had spoken with Puran and he had said that his client was reporting to the police. Since he vanished, police have searched several properties owned by Datram in a bid to find him but were unsuccessful.

Police had shown an interest in Datram after the drug-linked kidnapping of his wife, Sheleza and their three-year-old daughter last December by two Venezuelans, one of whom was later shot dead by the police.

Anyone who might have information that may lead to the arrest of Datram is being asked to contact the police on telephone numbers 225-6411, 226-6978, 225-8196, 225-3650, 226-1326, 225-7625 or 911 or the nearest police station.
