GSSBA back in action…

Currently number one in the nation, Cummings Lodge Secondary managed to remain undefeated while tossing Tutorial High further down in the standings in their first match in the second phase of the season in the Guyana Secondary School Basketball Association’s league.

Tutorial became their latest victim last Sunday afternoon when they fell 56-59 to the flaming hot Cummings Lodge team.

Keon Hayles, who is becoming one of the league’s most prolific scorers, registered a game-high 25 points for Cummings Logde while Bevon Spooner added 12 points for the victors. Coach of the Tutorial High team Julian Haynes, experienced the agony of defeat for the third time after starting the tournament 2-0. The entire Cummings lodge roster are members of the basketball club Grace Foundation which is coached by Haynes. Tutorial’s first loss came in a thriller against Queen’s College which game coincidentally, ended with the score identical to that of the Cummings Lodge game.

Michael Thompson managed a 22-point effort in his team’s losing effort along with Kevin Jordon who scored 10 points.

Meanwhile, Brickdam Secondary stunned St. Stanislaus College in a 36-30 game on Saturday.

Rodrick Grant proved to be just as effective as he was in Brickdam’s victory against Alleyne’s High late last year and ended with nine points and three assists. He was assisted by Cowen Gittens who contributed nine points and nine rebounds to his team’s victory.

Don Johnson scored 12 points while Troy Padaly added eight points for St. Stanislaus in their losing effort.

In the other game on Saturday, The Guyana Education Trust College pulled off a 19-13 upset win over the Business School who had earlier been successful in the private school match ups. Of the nineteen points on the scorecard for Trust College, Dominic Vincent was responsible for 10, while Rawle Prescott claimed eight points to go along with his six rebounds.

Charlestown Secondary gained a walkover from the New Campbellville Secondary, while Bishop’s Hiigh claimed a walkover from Christ Church Secondary for a match which was abandoned last year because of rain.
