Corbin condemns murders at Lusignan, cautions against racial conflict

PNCR Leader Robert Corbin has expressed shock and dismay at the tragedy which occurred at Lusignan early yesterday morning and called on all citizens not to allow themselves to be drawn into racial conflict and confrontation.

He also extended sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims.”We urge the government and particularly the President to act and speak responsibly at this time,” Corbin, who is also Leader of the Opposition, said. “We urge all leaders to exert their energies to promote peace. More importantly, we urge the government to fulfil its constitutional mandate to guarantee the security of our citizens on the East Coast which is the only way to begin the journey to normalcy.”

In his statement issued yesterday, Corbin also said, “We condemn the wanton murder of innocent citizens of that village, particularly the young people in their homes. Equally we condemn the shooting which occurred at the Police Headquarters last night [Friday].”

He said further that these incidents reflect the fragile security situation in this country which requires leadership and innovative approaches to bring it to an acceptable level.

The nature of this incident carried out by unknown and reckless gunmen can seriously affect stability of race relations in Guyana if not properly handled, Corbin said. And in that light, he urged all citizens not to allow the perpetrators of these acts to achieve their objectives. “If Guyana is to progress we need not only a climate of stability, but mutual respect and trust among the people of all races. Let us not allow ourselves to be drawn into racial conflict and confrontation which have adversely affected our nation in the past,” Corbin appealed.
