Alonzo Greaves continued from where he left off on the local circuit, when he won the feature event for schoolboys and novices in the National Sports Commission (NSC) sponsored Mashramani cycle race programme around the inner circuit of the National Park yesterday.
Greaves completed the distance in a time of 1hr: 27m:23seconds.
He completely dominated the field which saw 24 cyclist facing the starter but only eight finishing the race.
Christopher Holder, Christopher Persaud, Jaikarran Sukhai, John Hamilton and Kennard Lovell, completed the top six in that order.
Last week’s winner Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, did not compete as he is still enduring pain in his wrist following an accident he suffered last year, whilst Geron Williams is preparing for exams and declined the right to participate in the event.
Greaves also rode away with five of the eight sprint prizes that were up for grabs, with Holder claiming two and Lovell one.
In other results of the day, Berbician Neil Reece came and conquered his Georgetown counterparts in the 12-14 age group, but had to settle for the runner-up position behind Holder in the Juveniles category where Jonathan Fergundes placed third.
In the veterans’ Under-45 category, Hamilton easily out rode his more illustrious opponents in Linden Blackman and Lovell whilst Kenneth Meije, who recently returned from Suriname, came out on top in the Veterans’ Over-45 category. Compton Persaud placed second with Aubrey Greavsande third. Kester Croal won the Upright category from Dexter Wilson and Richard Charles in that order. In the BMX 6-9 years age group, Raymond Perez came out victorious over Rawle Mc Lean and Dineshwar Ragubhir respectively.
In the BMX 9-12 years category, Anthony Freeman and Troy Joseph finished second and third respectively to Orlando King.
Onia Mc Culley also was in winners’ row, winning the BMX 12-14 years category from Quincy Evans and Jamal Cromwell whilst Fagundes took care of the field in the Open BMX category.
At the presentation ceremony, national cycling coach, Hassan Mohammed, told the cyclists that he was heartened at the response to this meet, the second for the year.
He also brought the cyclists up to date with regards to upcoming events over the next four weeks.
Meanwhile Holder was the recipient of a new cycle from the Perez family.
This was done in recognition of his need after his present cycle got damaged.
In an invited comment, Debbie Perez, told Stabroek Sports that her husband saw it fit to present Holder with this cycle after his present cycle was damaged during an event last year.
“After Chris’ bike frame was damaged during a race in Berbice last year, my husband decided to present him with this new one.
Unfortunately, it could not have arrived in time before he competed in the NSC/ Ministry of Health/ HIV Aids Awareness Five Stage road race held late last year, but as they say better late than never,” Perez said.
The cyclists will meet again at the same venue this Saturday where they will compete in the George Cumberbatch Memorial organized by the Roraima Cycling Club.
