Kuru Kuru students tour Eccles water treatment plant

Thirteen students from the Kuru Kuru Training Centre on Thursday toured the Eccles Water Treatment Plant to observe its operations.

The Guyana Water Incor-porated (GWI) said in a press release that the exercise was an initiative from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCY&S) Youth Entrepreneurial Skills Train-ing Programme, which seeks to give its trainees an opportunity to accumulate knowledge and experience in the operations and modern technological development in established companies.

The students and two MYC&S instructors were able to witness all the stages of the purification process.

These include the intake of raw water; the removal of all particles and their storage in a reservoir to which chemicals such as chlorine and lime are added to remove impurities, bad taste and odour. Mixing takes place at this stage to evenly distribute the chemicals.

GWI used the tour as an opportunity to inform the students of the 70% operation cost towards electricity and also of the 60% losses suffered by the company due to leaks, tampered meters and damage to its pipelines.
