Villages in East, West Berbice flood

Several villages in East and West Berbice have been inundated following three days of intense rainfall and residents who have suffered major losses are calling for proper drainage systems to be put in place.

A Corentyne rice farmer said he was preparing to harvest his crop worth over $500,000 when the heavy showers came and “duck everything out.” The man is now wondering how he is going to repay his loan.

A government official told this newspaper that the “accumulation of four to six inches of water was caused by the high intensity rainfall and because a few sluices were not in operation. But we are working to reactivate the sluices
