Santos, Conquerors meet in Banks Cup quarters

Now that the minnows have exited the big guns will battle to stay in contention to win the inaugural Banks Premium Beer Cup when quarter-final action in the 16-team knockout tournament gets underway this evening at Tucville Playfield in La Penitence.

Fruta Conquerors will clash with Santos in the first match billed to start at 18:00 hours, while the second game of the evening will see Western Tigers taking on Pele at 20:00 hours.

Conquerors dominated their preliminary round match against Northern Rangers winning 8-0 and will be looking to continue their impressive showing against Santos who struggled in their 1-0 win over Black Pearl in their opening contest.

Conquerors will be spearheaded by Jomo Hinds, Franklyn Beresford, Gerald Gittens and Lester Peters but will be without the serves of experienced player Neville Stanton who received a red card in their last encounter. Santos will be pinning their hopes on Quincy Price who scored in their last match.

The Western Tigers and Pele clash in expected to be a keen tussle between the two in-form teams.

Pele will be relying heavily on their top players Kanata Manning, Travis Grant and Devon Edinboro, while Tigers line up will include Eddie Gomes, Paul Giles and Devon Millington.

The final two preliminary matches featuring Sunburst Camptown against Houston Stars and Guyana Defence Force versus Georgetown Football Club which were billed for Friday evening but rescheduled due to inclement weather were to be played last evening at the Tucville ground.

The other teams also through to the quarterfinals are Alpha United and Uprising and they will be joined by the winners of last night’s matches.

At stake in the competition is a first prize of $250,000with the runners-up team securing $125,000, the third place side will take home $75,000 while fourth place will receive $50,000.

The tournament is sponsored by local beverage giants Banks DIH Ltd. and organized by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA).
