‘Georgie Pasture’ squatter given marching orders

The Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GL&SC) has served notice to a private investor who has been illegally occupying land in Cane Grove, Mahaica.

According to a GINA press release, the notice was served after an inspection conducted by the GL&SC revealed that the land was being illegally occupied contrary to the State Lands Act Chapter 62:01.

The inspection followed complaints from farmers at Cane Grove that farming activities on the occupied land were having negative impacts on drainage and irrigation in their community.

At a meeting held on January 17 with Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, farmers were told that a complete investigation of the matter had to be done before any action could be taken. A committee was then formed to investigate the issue of the illegal occupancy.

The committee comprised Chairman of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Walter Willis, the said investor, farmers from the community and representatives of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and the GL&SC. The Guyana Police Force and the Attorney General’s Chambers will be advised of the situation.
