Police still hunting for Riverview gunman

The police were still on the hunt up to press time last night for a gunman who threatened two women with a firearm at Riverview Sea Dam, Ruimveldt before opening fire on several ranks on Wednesday night.

According to a release yesterday the police said that they are investigating an incident that occurred around 9:35 pm at the sea dam where Nicola Alphanso, 25, and Oneaciah Gilliard, 26, were threatened by a man armed with a firearm and who also discharged several rounds at the police.

Investigations, the release said, have so far revealed that the women were on their way to visit a friend at Riverview Sea Dam when in the vicinity of First Street, Riverview, the suspect approached them and followed them while questioning them as to their destination.

He subsequently pulled out a firearm and discharged a number of rounds while threatening them, the police said.

The police were alerted to the discharging of the rounds and proceeded quickly to the area on foot. On their way to the friend’s house the ranks saw the suspect, who is known to them, standing on the roadway. He discharged several rounds at the police who took cover and returned fire.

The release added that the ranks were later joined by others and a search of the area was conducted but the suspect was not found. It is believed that he escaped by way of the Demerara River.

Further, the release said that the women were later found in the friend’s home.
