Larceny accused gets option – pay for 39 tops or serve three years

A 38-year-old woman who stole thirty-nine ladies tops worth $162,242 from a store where she was employed was on Thursday remanded to prison when she was taken before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Fazia Abdul of Coldingen, East Coast Demerara pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to her by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

According to reports, on September 15, 2007 Abdul stole some costume jewelry from her place of employment. However, the woman’s employer after listening to her explanation decided to give her a chance.

On February 11, a representative from the store said they did an inventory on the ladies tops and discovered 39 were missing. Abdul was confronted and she admitted to stealing the items and the matter was reported to the police.

Abdul was given a choice of either repaying the store or serving a three-year sentence. She is to report to court on February 18.
