Bartica slowly returning to normalcy

Taxis plied their routes and more students turned out to school in Bartica as the residents continue to ‘pick up the pieces’ of their lives in the wake of the murders last Sunday.

Regional Chairman Holbert Knights said yesterday and last night the streets were brighter and more people were seen going about their business. However, one resident said though things were returning to normal, the community was still tense and they cannot help but discuss the way 12 persons lost their lives. Stabroek News was also told that Bartica police remain on high alert and the presence of ranks from the Joint Services has helped the community to retain a sense of normalcy.

Meanwhile as investigations continue into the attack, police picked up three other Barticians last weekend in addition to the three already in custody. The men are being held for questioning as it is believed that they may have vital information that could inform the investigations. A police source told Stabroek News yesterday that one of the new detainees was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters in the city.

One of the men is said to be the son of one of the boat captains who might have assisted the gunmen.

The men remained in custody up to press time last night.
