Time to improve security at Bartica

Dear Editor,

Bartica was known as a peaceful and loving community. No one expected such an attack.

Several things must be done to improve security.

1. The station barracks at 7th Avenue needs revamping with about ten soldiers stationed with a vehicle, weapons and radios.

2. GPL needs bigger generator sets as we are plagued with blackouts; GPL also needs a small pick up vehicle to attend to emergencies as whenever a fuse blows we usually wait until next day.

3. From 1st Street to 1st Ave to Byderabu needs more street lamps. Lots of street lights have not been working for years.

4. Outside of the ferry stelling and the boat houses need more lights.

5. The Bartica Police Station front needs a high steel fence and armed police on guard and a siren to alert residents whenever there is an emergency.

6. Speedboats need to be checked when arriving and departing Bartica for suspicious persons. The ferry stelling should be the main port of entry and departing.

7. No one should be allowed to walk and sell from house to house.

8. At 4 Miles or air strip area Potaro road there should be a police or soldiers check point for vehicles plying in and out of Bartica.

9. Bartica is a tourist destination and many visitors frequent our community. Security is our main priority for a better Bartica and Guyana. Most of these suggestions have come in by phone calls on my weekly television programme on TTS CM5.

Mr President, please upgrade our airstrip and the five miles of bad road to the airstrip.

My sympathy to all the relatives of the deceased.

Yours faithfully,

Winston Miller
