Frankly Speaking

Why not? Guyana, through its President some five/six months ago, generously offered to host the landmark tenth edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (Carifesta.)

Perhaps the Finance Minister’s remarks about that festival being a potential “impetus” for economic development offers one (major) reason for the President’s grand gesture, in the face of all the challenges this depressed economy still faces. Perhaps, again, they are quite obvious to him and those closest to his own caucuses, but do you realise that the Head of State has never really articulated publicly, his own reasons and objectives for hosting such a cultural, mega-event at this time.

What? He did not, or does not, have to? Well not really. No matter how personal or considered the decision, the committal of such precious national resources is the nation’s business ultimately. The classic response would be that the President – and his government – was elected, had full confidence reposed in him, in them, to make such decisions. Er
