Don’t increase the pension age to 65

Dear Editor,

It would be appalling if the administration were to deem it fit to increase the NIS pension age to 65 years as recommended in a recent report.

As it is with the present age at 60 years, I’m sure that statistics would show that almost 50 % of NIS contributors do not reach pensionable age.

With all the stress put upon us here in Guyana – high inflation, small salaries, 33.33% PAYE, 16% VAT, just to mention a few, many people in Guyana will not live to that ripe old age.

The working class people need to take a firm stand against this proposal.

Yours faithfully,
