Man denies stealing $3.4M in clothes, stuff from workplace

A thirty-five-year-old man who allegedly stole $3.4 million in clothes and other stock from his place of employment was yesterday taken before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Carlos Henderson of 48 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny by a clerk or servant when it was read to him by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

It is alleged that during May 1 and August 30 last year Henderson stole the items in question from his place of employment at a popular store on Robb Street.

However, attorney-at-law Trevor Williams said that he was instructed that his client didn’t steal the items. In fact, he said, Henderson was a partner of the business along with the virtual complainant Ron Morrison. A document was produced to the court as evidence of the business partnership.

Morrison denied this, explaining that indeed a partnership agreement was signed after which certain requirements had to be met. However, the third party in the partnership withdrew and no further steps were taken, he explained, so Henderson was never made a partner. The business, Morrison said, was registered as a sole proprietorship and in that situation Henderson being an employee with access to the business stole the items.

Williams maintained that his client was a partner and had invested his entire life’s savings into the business. The defence attorney then made an application for bail.

Henderson was placed on $200,000 bail and the matter was transferred to Court Six to be continued on April 4.
