Chicken supply to ‘normalize’ next month

There is currently a shortfall in the supply of chicken but supplies will return to normal in the latter half of next month, the Guyana Poultry Producers Association says.

In a statement yesterday the association said that increased acquisition costs of the main feed ingredients used to produce animal feed and not a shortage led to increases in feed and chicken prices on the local market

The statement said that it recognized that there is currently a shortfall in the supply of chicken on the market and this was highlighted at a meeting between the poultry producers and the Ministry of Agriculture earlier this month. “The industry has already made the necessary adjustments to alleviate these problems, as evident from the increased supply of broiler chicks being made available to farmers. Consumers will see supplies return to normal by the second half of April 2008”, the statement said.

It pointed out however, that “the industry is faced with the reality that Global prices of feed ingredients which in some cases has risen over 100% over the last year will affect the livestock industry worldwide for sometime to come.”

The statement added that the association with assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture is making every effort to find new ways of reducing the cost of feed ingredients. To this end several projects are being looked at for the production of feed grade rice locally, the statement said.
