Razor blades thief cuts losses by taking jail time

A 38-year-old man who stole a case of razor blades worth $110,000 was yesterday jailed for nine months after he declined the offer of a $25,000 fine when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Linden Ferrell of 111 Laluni Street, Queenstown, pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

On March 14 at approximately 8 am Ferrell stole the razor blades, property of Hemchandra Balkaran, in the Stabroek Market.

Ferrell told the court that he didn’t really steal the item in question but he saw the case of razor blades in the pathway of the market unattended and he just decided to pick it up.

The magistrate gave the defendant the choice of a $25,000 fine or a nine-month prison sentence. Ferrell promptly chose to serve the time and exited the courtroom smiling and thanking the court.
