Guyana accedes to UN Convention against corruption

Cabinet has agreed to Guyana’s accession to the United Nations(UN) Conven-tion against corruption and to the protocol of the UN Con-vention against trans-national organised crime, specifically that no migrants be smuggled by land, sea and air.

“The protocol against smuggling of migrants by land, sea and air requires state partners to prevent and combat trafficking in persons, to protect and assist victims of trafficking and to promote cooperation among states in order for us to meet those objectives,” Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon said on Wednesday.

He was speaking at his weekly post-Cabinet media briefing at the Office of the President, a GINA release stated.

Luncheon also underscored that the UN Conven-tion against Corruption is global and covers both Government and the private sector.

“Guyana is already signatory to the Organisation of American States (OAS) Convention against corruption. The UN Convention seeks to prevent, to deter, to detect the various forms of corruption through transparency, adherence to the rule of law, accountability, international cooperation, technical assistance, sharing of information and asset recovery,” the Cabinet Secretary stated.

And Cabinet has also approved Guyana’s ratification of the Beijing Amend-ment to the Montreal Protocol of substances that deplete the ozone layer, Dr Luncheon said. He pointed out that the Beijing Amendment introduces new controls on the production of substances that deplete the ozone layer by extending controls beyond the current consumption to manufacture while it was noted that Guyana acceded to the Parent Convention on September 14, 2004.
