Easter holds many lessons -Jagdeo

President Bharrat Jagdeo says there are many lessons which the nation could embrace from the story of Easter as it comes to grips with some of the recent challenges, and if ever Guyanese needed the spiritual qualities of reconciliation and forgiveness, it was now.

His observations came in an Easter message in which he extended greetings to all Guyanese, especially the Christian community.

In the message, the president said that over the past months several unsavory events had occurred which had resulted in bitterness, rage and anger among the people, but said that Guyanese were standing together at this very critical juncture and would continue to do so to withstand the temptation of adversaries.

“For our nation to enjoy sustained peace and prosperity, these unwholesome trends must be reversed, restrained and restricted. What better time for this process to begin than during the Easter season,” the President said.

Persons must know, he continued, that forgiveness and reconciliation which the Easter message brought came with a price, and Christ had been willing to pay that price. If the message of forgiveness was to become a reality, the nation and each individual must be willing to pay a price. He urged that everyone give their time and energy to achieve reconciliation and forgiveness.

Jagdeo concluded by asking everyone to make a commitment to continue to build strong family units. “For not to do this, opens our nation to spiritual and moral decay. Easter reminds us of the true path to follow,” the statement said.
