Dredge owner hacked to death in row over woman

A man said to be a dredge-owner was hacked to death reportedly by a Brazilian national, who has since been on the run, following an argument over a woman at Puruni, Mazuruni River early yesterday.
Police said the body of the murdered man, known as ‘Douglah’ has since been transported to Bartica while the woman was treated for a chop wound to her left shoulder. The Brazilian national, who reportedly committed the act, has not been located by police.

According to reports, the incident occurred at about 12.10 am yesterday at Jackass Island, Puruni.

Police sources told Stabroek News that the now dead dredge owner and another man were drinking while the woman, who had reportedly met the dead man a few days ago, was sitting nearby.

The Brazilian national, who is also a dredge owner reportedly approached and demanded that the woman go with him but she refused. The Brazilian reportedly took out a cutlass and hit the now-dead man and he in turn picked up a bottle, broke it and hit the assailant in his head.

In a bloodied state, the Brazilian left the area but lay in wait a short distance away and waylaid the couple when they were passing. He reportedly attacked the woman first chopping her on the left shoulder before hacking ‘Douglah’ to death.

A police press release said ‘Douglah’ was of mixed race, in his mid-thirties, about 5’3”, thin, dark and clad in a brown jersey and black three-quarter pants.

The police at Bartica were notified and travelled to the area yesterday but were unable to locate the Brazilian. Investigations are continuing.
