Arson in death of trio?

The fire at Land of Canaan that killed two children and their grandmother on Tuesday appears more and more like the act of an arsonist, relatives say.
Relatives of those who died were patching together details of the fire yesterday and are of the opinion that someone meant to harm the family.

Jean Moreno who lost her two children; Shemar and Melvina and her mother, Basmat Arjune told Stabroek News yesterday that even in grief she is forced to ask difficult questions about the fire. She said the information provided so far has been pointing to arson.

“There was no light, none at all in the house and we are certain the fire started downstairs. There was nobody downstairs at the time which makes us very suspicious”, the woman added. According to her, there are reports that the fire started on the steps leading to the upper flat of the home.

Moreno said they are leaving everything in God’s hands and that someday the truth will come out. She said her nephew Suresh who escaped the blaze is still recuperating in hospital and remains in a depressed state.

Contacted on the fire yesterday, Fire Chief Lawrence David said his department is investigating the blaze and is still to take statements. He said they were unable to take a statement from Suresh Moreno because of his condition. David added that it is too soon for the department to comment on the source of the blaze.
