Fowl thief to be cooped up for four months

Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Tuesday remanded to prison an East Bank man who stole his neighbour’s fowl after he opted to serve the four-month prison term in lieu of a $10,000 fine.
Gavin Roach, 37, of 44 Bagotstown pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

According to the facts of the case, on February 23 Roach stole a fowl valued $700 from his neighbour’s yard. When the magistrate asked him why he stole the fowl, Roach told the court that he was hungry and had intended to boil the fowl to eat. He said his neighbour’s fowls usually fly over into his yard and on this occasion he took one.

However, reports are that Roach went into his neighbour’s yard and stole the fowl. The virtual complainant was alerted by the fowl’s cackling and saw Roach taking it.
