Young Guyanese golfer excels in Suriname

Almost a Hole In One! Young Avinash Persaud stands next to where his ball stopped on the Par three hole number 13

Teenage golfing star Avinash Persaud kept the Golden Arrowhead flying high at the recently concluded RBTT 2008 Invitational held at the Golfclub Paramaribo on March 29 and 30.

From a field of seventy-two (72) golfers which included a contingent from French Guiana as well as a thirteen strong team from Guyana, Guyana’s Open 2006 champion, Persaud put in a sterling performance to record the best gross score over the two days. Playing off of a three handicap, Persaud’s gross scores were 76 and 68, the latter being one-under par and which included a scintillating three under par 31 in the back nine on the final day, narrowly missing out on a Hole-In-One when his tee shot ended 6 inches to the right of the hole.

Persaud also won the Longest Drive on the final day, almost driving the green on the 297 yd par – 4, 18th hole, with an explosive tee-shot into a strong headwind.

Other creditable performances came from Brian Glasford who recorded a fourth place finish in the A – Flight with a combined net score of 142 over the two days and Imran Khan, who won the Nearest to Pin on day two.

Among the ladies, the normally consistent Christine Sukhram did not play to her usual high standard but still carded the second best gross overall score as well as winning the Longest Drive on day one.

Guyana’s participation was praised by the organisers and plans are being worked on to have an annual Inter-Guianas Tournament to be rotated between the three neighbouring countries. It is hoped that the Inaugural one will be held in Guyana to coincide with the Guyana Open in November.

Club captain Patrick Prashad thanked the hosts for an excellently run tournament and promised that Guyana will be back next year.
