Four years jail for throwing corrosive liquid

Magistrate Krishendat Persaud sentenced a labourer to four years jail at the Springlands Court on Thursday after he admitted to throwing a corrosive substance on another man.
According to the facts of the case on January 29, John Warde also called John Bate, 33, of Kingston, Corriverton threw the substance on Otis Warde resulting in him suffering injuries to his head and face.
Police Prosecutor Sergeant Michael Grant told the court that the two men were involved in an argument over a pair of boots. He said the victim, also of Kingston, accused the defendant of stealing his boots and a scuffle ensued between them. Grant said the defendant went away and returned five minutes later with an axe and a bottle containing the liquid.

According to the prosecutor, Warde again confronted the victim and threw the substance at him. He was picked up in an unconscious state and was rushed to Skeldon Hospital. Otis was then referred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was a patient for one month.
In admitting that he had carried out the attack, Warde said he had done it because Otis and his family were always bullying him. He pleaded with the magistrate for leniency.

In response the magistrate told Warde that even if he had been bullied he did not have to take the law into his own hands and should have reported the matter to the police.
