Concerned at the low pass rate

Dear Editor,
Yesterday’s story about the low pass rate of 17% for the entrance exams of the GDF should have caused some raised eyebrows but on reflection I asked myself the following questions.
Did most of the applicants or all fail previously their Common Entrance exams in their pre teen days and what schools did they pursue after – was it community ones? If the answer is yes then our expectations were too high.
What is of concern to me is the necessity for a good standard education in our disciplined forces but I welcome the remedial education programme planned and according to ag Chief of Staff Col Lovell “that the army will also be adopting a holistic approach to national security”. We all need to be partners in security.
Yours faithfully,
