Cabinet to meet communities on rising food prices

Cabinet will mount an immediate exercise nationwide to meet with communities to inform them of measures to deal with the increased cost of living, particularly as it relates to the supply of basic foodstuff.

Dr Roger LuncheonHead of the Presidential Secretariat Dr Roger Luncheon told the media that the objective of the exercise, which was due to begin with discussions yesterday afternoon at the level of Cabinet, immediately followed by outreach activities, was also to “explore additional moves and then identify target populations.”

At Cabinet, he said that the report of the Special Inter-Ministry Committee on Food was examined on Tuesday. The report focused on interventions to manage price escalations and/or address the supply and demand considerations. Aside from the costs of imported and home grown food, Luncheon said that the situation regarding major dietary commodities such as flour, rice, green vegetables, animal and plant protein and ground provisions was also examined.
