Palmyra shopowner attacked by bandits

Three bandits, armed with a gun and cutlasses, on Friday night robbed an elderly Palmyra, Canje shopowner of over half a million dollars in cash and jewellery and beat him and his wife before escaping.

The robbers descended upon 66-year-old Harmanlall’s 88 Palmyra, Canje residence at about 10:40 pm on Friday night. According to reports, the bandits were dressed in dark clothing, were wearing masks and one was armed with a handgun while the other two were armed with cutlasses.

Harmanlall and his wife, Dhanmattie Sukdeo, 50, were home at the time and the bandits demanded money and jewellery from the couple. While making their demands the bandits repeatedly hit them. At the end of the ordeal, the robbers escaped with $140,000 cash, half-a-million dollars worth of jewellery and $10,000 in Digicel phone cards.

The police were summoned but by then the bandits had made good their escape. Sukdeo, who suffered head injuries was treated at the New Amsterdam hospital and sent away.
Police are investigating.
