SWAT ranks deployed to Berbice

Policing in Berbice is being boosted with the deployment of ranks of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit to the division, the Guyana Police Force announced yesterday.

In a brief statement released yesterday, the force said a team of ranks from the unit has been dispatched to Berbice to support the division in its policing strategy.

The move comes amid continuing bandit attacks in the region

Over the past few weeks, residents of various parts of Berbice, particularly on the Corentyne, have been targeted by armed bandits.

Last week, in an attack at Number 48 Village, Corentyne, bandits carved a hole in a wooden wall to enter a house and then assaulted and robbed the household. They fled after a shootout with the police.

Earlier in July, gangs of armed men robbed and brutalised two families at St. Johns, Corentyne and Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank of Berbice.

On July 6th, businesswoman Angela Hussain of Palmyra, Canje, Berbice was shot in her head when five men, armed with firearms and cutlasses, entered her shop and held her up along with her family. They later fled with jewellery and an undisclosed sum of cash. The woman survived.
