I was disappointed by Commodore Best’s confrontational language

Dear Editor,

It was good that the Chief of Staff of the GDF held a Press Conference to give the nation the perspective of the GDF on the two recently acquired helicopters. Would it not have been wonderful for NCN to have arranged a discussion programme on television featuring the GDF and some critics of the purchase, thereby lending credibility to the claim made of NCN that it is a national institution?

Returning to the press  conference I must say however that I was disappointed by the language used by Commodore Best to describe critics of the deal. It was acerbic, confrontational, unhelpful and unnecessary. In my view it sullied the quality of his presentation as reported in the issue of Stabroek News of April 13. Moreover, the language used by the Chief of Staff has for too long been staple diet for our political elites.A dangerous and frightening consequence is that anyone proffering a different but honest opinion faces the unfortunate prospect of being branded silly, mischievous, unpatriotic, anti-party and even anti-government.
May the Great Spirit help us and save us from ourselves.

Yours faithfully,
Rashleigh E Jackson
