Defence to make closing arguments in pit bull attack case

After about six months before the court, the case against Vilton Bourne, the owner of two pit bulls who attacked and seriously injured a man as he was jogging near Well Road, North Ruimveldt, is coming to an end.

When the matter resumes on May 21, the defence is expected to give closing arguments. Attorney-at-law Ronald Burch-Smith is representing Bourne.
Stabroek News understands that some eight witnesses including the 57-year-old victim, Lennox Wade and his wife had testified during the trial.

On October 1 last year, two pit bulls attacked Wade and in a 13-minute ordeal left him with huge gouges in one of his legs and arms and countless bite marks about his body including his neck and back. It is unclear how the animals managed to escape from their owner’s yard but a woman in the area went to Wade’s rescue.

Wade, a miner/furniture manufacturer had to undergo several operations to repair his damage ligaments and was even told that he has to go overseas for additional treatment.
During his stay at the Georgetown Hospital, he was unable to do much for himself and had described himself as a `vegetable’.

Several days after the attack, the owner, Bourne appeared before Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys charged with suffering ferocious dogs to be at large and not muzzled but denied the allegations.

He was released on self-bail and the matter was transferred to Magistrate Oneidge Waldron-Allicock for trial.
