Teen accused of stealing $90,000 of jewellery remanded

A 15-year-old boy accused of breaking and entering a woman’s home and stealing jewellery worth over $90,000 was remanded into police custody when he appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The teenager pleaded not guilty to two charges of burglary when he appeared before Magistrate Fazil Azeez.

It is alleged that on the night of April 4, at Bagotville, West Bank Demerara, the teen broke and entered the dwelling house of Karen Duke and stole a gold chain worth $65,000 the property of Odinga Caldera. He is also accused of stealing a gold chain and pendant valued at $30,000 the property of Duke.

The matter was reported and following investigations, the juvenile was arrested and charged.

Duke told the court that around 4.30 am on the said day she awoke to see the defendant standing in her bedroom door.

She said she screamed and he ran away.

In denying the charges the minor told the court that he usually awoke at 5 am every day to exercise.

The court was told that he was known for committing similar offences.
The matter was transferred to the Wales Magistrate’s Court for May 8.
