Five charged over $11M fuel theft

Five men who allegedly stole just over $11 million worth of fuel were placed on bail on Monday when they appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Ivor CameronIvor Cameron, 20, of First Street, Alberttown; Surendra Ramchandra, 21, of Cornelia Ida Squatting Area, West Coast Demerara; Terrence Mackintosh, 32, of Lot 16 Supply, East Bank Demerara; Andre Mohammed, 27, of 9E30 South Cummings Lodge and Dameon Hunter of 5 Ogle Front, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny.
Surendra RamchandraIt is alleged that on April 25 the five men stole over 57,000 litres of fuel from their place of employ, Sol Guyana Incorporated. The actual value of the stolen fuel is $11,131,818.

Terrence MackintoshGwendolyn Bristol, Mohammed Zafar, Abiola Wong and Adrian Thompson represented Mohammed and Hunter, Ramchandra, Cameron, and Mackintosh, respectively. The lawyers made applications for reasonable bail to be granted.

Andre MohammedIt was established that Mohammed and Cameron are security officers attached to the company and they were on duty at the time of the alleged theft. The other three men are employees of the said company.

Dameon HunterPrincipal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle granted the men bail in the sum of $300,000 each. The matter was transferred to Court Six and will continue on May 30.
