Faulty fuel inlet valve triggered blackouts – GPL

The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) yesterday said that a malfunctioning fuel inlet valve triggered several blackouts on Monday in Georgetown.

In a statement, GPL said that at approximately 3:54 pm on Monday, its  Kingston 2 Plant with a generation availability of approximately 36 Megawatts (MWs) went offline, affecting service to some customers in Georgetown, East Coast Deme-rara, East Bank Demerara, West Coast Demerara and East Bank Essequibo.

GPL said that a technical team immediately commenced remedial work to restore power to affected areas.

At approximately 5.05 pm all areas were repowered. Subsequently, some customers experienced further service interruptions at approximately 7.15 pm  when 8MWs and later at 1 am yesterday when approximately 16MWs went offline at the Kingston 2 Plant. In both instances, power was restored to affected customers, GPL said.

It added that a comprehensive technical investigation showed that the fuel inlet valve malfunctioned and affected the flow of fuel to the generators causing them to go offline. Corrective actions were subsequently taken to stabilise generation at the Kingston 2 Plant and normalise the power supply, GPL said.
