Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee says he is concerned about police stations being locked up and lights turned off at nights, insisting that the public should have 24-hour access.
Rohee raised this issue at a meeting with the Timehri Community Policing Group (CPG) on Sunday, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported. The group told the minister that they were concerned about the lack of support from the police and the slow response they receive when reports are made at the station. They also said they needed to have access to a vehicle for patrolling since the distance was too much for them to traverse on foot.
The minister said a CPG coordinator was recently recruited with whom they can share their concerns. Rohee also said he had received complaints about lack of co-operation from other groups and urged them to collaborate. He said if there is strife between the groups only the criminals stand to benefit.
According to GINA, police ranks at the meeting raised concerns about the character of some persons in the Timehri group. In response, Rohee said the president of the group should be advised accordingly and an inquiry can be launched.
