Mon Repos parapet has been paved for vendors, not cars

Dear Editor,

I wish to add my comment on a similar issue concerning parking brought up by G. Singh and Mayor Hamilton Green. I go to the Mon Repos Market every Saturday, and as you probably know it’s one of the largest and busiest East Coast markets and attracts patrons from all parts of Guyana.

The one contention was always parking, and then I saw the parapet on the left-hand side upgraded,  paved and marked for what I assumed to be parking space for vendors as well as customers.
Imagine my astonishment last Saturday when I attempted to park and was told by a gentleman that I could not park there as these were now spots being sold and allocated for vending.

On looking down I saw crudely painted some numbers in yellow paint. I had to park past the 401 Furniture Store, and when I returned to my vehicle someone had broken into the car and damaged my lock. Upon walking to the market I saw a vehicle [number given] parked in the exact spot where I was going to park. The gentleman that had told me I could not park there was nearby, so I politely asked him how come he did not allow me to park there but allowed another vehicle to do so. He replied that the vehicle belonged to a senior government official. So once again we will create an untidy rabble of vendors outside the Mon Repos Market and the market itself will become another white elephant. In closing I would like to encourage all regular shoppers to boycott those vendors selling outside entirely and support the ones inside, and yes, I know that it will now take several trips to your car parked far away to get your stuff in, but look at it this way, you will be getting some physical exercise and that can never be a bad thing.

Yours faithfully,
