Super Centre trio granted bail over larceny from company

Three National Hardware, Super Centre employees including a teenager yesterday appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robinson-Ogle in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court accused of stealing from the company.

Paul Panday, 19, of Lot 779 First Wheel, Cummings Lodge pleaded not guilty to a charge of larceny by clerk or servant while Anil Bhagwandin, 20, of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara and Dinesh Seecharran, also 20 years, of 49  Best Village, West Coast Demerara denied a joint count of the same charge. They were released on $20,000 and $75,000 respectively.
It is alleged that between May 1 and 14, Panday being a clerk or servant attached to the store stole three numerals valued $1,816.

Bhagwandin and Seecharran are accused of stealing four cordless electrical drills and one polisher and sander machine together valued $243,074.

The trio was represented by attorney-at-law Paul Fung-a-Fat. In his application for bail, the defence counsel submitted that none of the defendants left the premises with the items that they allegedly stole.

In the case of Panday, Fung-a-Fat said that he has been working at the Super Centre for the last year as a porter. Counsel submitted that the articles were put there by  someone, but he did not leave the premises so there was no robbery. In Bhagwandin’s defence, the counsel said that he has been employed with the store for the past year as a bond clerk and was held by police for two days.

Seecharran, he said, lived with his mother and has been employed with the store for the past nine months as a sales clerk.

He said that at the time of the alleged discovery  he had not reached the gate to leave the premises.

On those grounds he asked the court for reasonable bail for his clients.

Police prosecutor Denise Griffith did not oppose bail. The magistrate subsequently announced that she was releasing Panday on $20,000 bail and the others on $75,000 each.

The matter was adjourned to May 24 in Court Four.
