City, police to look at ending vendor congestion

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) along with the police force is to come up with an amicable solution to the congestion of vendors around the city, especially in the Stabroek area.

The congestion was noted when Transport Minister Robeson Benn conducted a walkabout to assess the new parking arrangements for minibuses in the city, a Government Information Agency (GINA) release said. The minister said although he was satisfied that the minibus operators were adhering to the relocations stall vendors were encroaching on the roadways causing discomfort to commuters and stalling traffic.

Town Clerk Beulah Williams who shared the same views with the minister said many people were involved but the city would not encourage such a situation and discussions to come up with amicable solutions are ongoing.

The minister pointed out that if persons made use of the area behind the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry that was designated for vendors to sell comfortably then “congestion will be significantly reduced and traffic management will be more efficient.”

Removal of vehicles and vendors at the area around parliament was also under consideration, the release said.
