CLICO fireworks to usher in independence

CLICO says it will again set the skies alight with giant splashes of fiery colour just after midnight on Independence morning.

In a press release the company said over the last four years it has arranged this “gift to the nation” at significant expense and preparation. CLICO said for the last two years US-based Melrose South Pyrotechnics Inc has provided the necessary shells and expertise needed to execute the grand display. The shells are packed and start a six-week journey by sea, from Miami, Florida to Guyana.

“It is at this point that we become a bit nervous,” Sales and Marketing Manager Venita Bovell said, as the crowning moment of the Flag Raising Ceremony is the CLICO Fireworks Display. CLICO seeks assistance from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) when the shells arrive in the country as they are highly flammable explosives and must be handled by persons with pyrotechnic expertise. The company said too technicians from Melrose Pyrotechnic then travel to Guyana to assist the GDF with launching each shell.
The entire process is done at an approximate cost of $25M, a significant investment, CLICO Guyana CEO Geeta Singh-Knight said. However, the delight on the faces of citizens assembled at the National Park and around the city makes it worthwhile, she added.
