Officials from the National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU) have seized 20 unlicensed two-way radios from 17 locations in Georgetown and on the East Coast and East Bank over the last five months.
At one location three persons who obstructed the NFMU’s officers from executing a search and seize warrant were arrested by police, who were there to assist, a press release said. The radios were seized as a result of the Unit’s heightened campaign against unlicensed and unauthorized usage of wireless telegraphy apparatus (two-way radios).
Meanwhile, the NFMU said while it has so far “concentrated its efforts on persons operating without licenses, it will soon be extending action against persons who have not been renewing their licenses and those who have been operating illegally and unauthorized radio frequencies.” The NFMU therefore urges operators of this type of equipment to ensure that they operate within the confines of the law, and to ensure that they are properly licensed to operate the said radios; have renewed their licences by paying the required fees to the Unit and operate their radios on the authorized radio frequencies only.
Failure to comply with these requirements will result in the seizure of the offending two-way radio and institution of criminal proceedings against the users/operators and or the cancellation of licenses in accordance with the Post and Telegraph Act Chapter 47:01.
Further, the release said that to avoid inconveniences, persons who have two-way radio antennae/aerials erected on their buildings and vehicles but do not have any such equipment and/or licenses to establish and operate the radios are urged to dismantle them. Failure to do so may result in search operations being conducted on the said places.
